Collaborative Consumption Helps American Millennials Drive Less, Share More

shutterstock_105569363A combination of car-sharing, bike-sharing, and high quality public transportation apps have helped change the relationship between U.S. drivers and cars. The average number of miles driven by Americans has fallen steadily since 2005, and a generational shift has accelerated the change: Between 2001 and 2009, the average number of miles driven by 16- to 34-year-olds dropped by 23 percent. And a study by the University of California, Berkley shows that 1 shared car replaces 9-13 owned cars.

Whether motives are environmental or based on convenience, the rise of car-sharing has resulted in significantly more efficient use of goods, as well as energy and natural resources. And as millennials continue to migrate to urban areas, it seems driving decline will continue.
